Today, we're diving into a game-changing release technique to use against press coverage--the 2 step counter. It will give your receivers the edge they need to dominate defensive backs and create explosive plays downfield.
Gunter Brewer, Assistant Coach at Virginia Tech breaks down the way he teaches the 2 step counter. You will hear in detail his teaching points, as well as see practice and game film.
The video was taken from Coach Brewer's Glazier Drive clinic on WR Level 1 Release to Get Off the Line of Scrimmage: 2 Step/Counter.
Level 1 Releases vs. Press Coverage
A. Speed Release
B. 1 Step/Jab
C. 2 Step/Counter
D. Split Dodge
The progression of the 1 step release. First step to the direction you want to go or end up - then a 2nd step with more inflection opposite.
Make sure you are not stepping outside your frame work of your body too much if at all. Can be used for an Outside or inside release. Finis where you started.
Counter: 2 Step Release
A complement to the 1 Step Release. Using a subtle "come to balance 1st step." Then, a quick and violent 2nd step with upper body movement used to gather information on what tech.
The defender is going to play and to steer him in the wrong direction. This extremely quick and violent 2nd step will mislead/fake the defender allowing for a smooth release. This release can be used with either foot as long as it's with the back foot. Finish where you started.
