The 'Grab the Watch' Technique: How Elite RBs Survive Multi-Defender Hit - AJ Steward

AJ Steward, Offensive Analyst at Kansas has been a running backs coach for much of his career.  He teaches a technique that he calls "Grab the Watch" to help his backs improve ball security in traffic/vice situations and gain extra yards after contact.

In the video, you will see him discuss the specific teaching points of his technique.  He goes into how to drill it with practice film and shows footage of in-game applications.

Some of the teaching points for the Grab the Watch technique:


WHEN TO USE IT:

  • Vice situations
  • Multiple defenders converging
  • Near-ball defender
  • Strike zone - 2-yard radius from defender(s)

DETAILS:

  • Pull wrist back into body
  • Reduce surface

KEY COACHING POINTS:

  • Eyes up
  • Pick a side
  • Expect to come out on the other side with the ball
