Wes Smith, Assistant Coach, DeLand High School (FL) shares three drills that he has borrowed and adapted to his schemes and athletes.  The drills are presented in a way that you can adapt them to your scheme.

The drills shown in the video are: Situational Tackling--Read Option Drill, Circle Chase, and Gap Tackle.

His entire clinic on: Situational Tackling & Team Drills is available only on Glazier Drive.

Defensive Philosophy

  • RUN TO THE BALL

  • If we get 8, 9, 10, 11 to the ball every play, we can correct a missed tackle.

  • Teams that pursue the football passionately, don't give up too many big plays due to missed tackles.

  • Near Leg, Near Shoulder Tackling.

  • "Own your leverage, own your hip, use your help."

  • Keep the head out of contact.

  • Our kids love contact, but the goal is (and will always be) to get the ball carrier on the ground and make them snap it again.

  • Making the tackle is a priority over delivering a big hit.
