Developing a Base Identity on Defense: Philosophy & Evolution of the Ferris State Multiple 4-3/6-1 Defense is his entire Glazier Drive presentation that goes into much more detail on the base defense that has helped Ferris State to become a national D2 power.

Ferris State Defensive Philosophy

  • Foundation.  Identify and develop a base defense that allows your players to play fast.  Build from your base defense. You have to adjust your defense around the talents of the players from year to year.

  • Relentless Effort. Regardless of their talent level, players can always give their best.  Teach players to finish properly.  Never give up.   Give us an opportunity to line up again. Be consistent in your demands.

  • Communication. On the field and off the field.  Coach to coach. Coach to player. Player to player. Build relationships.

  • Collaboration.  Be open to ideas from all staff members.  Allow players to give input.  Be a driving force, not a dictator.

  • Adaptability. Adjust to your defensive personnel.  Match personnel.  Opent to new ideas. Formational adjustments.

  • Instinctual. Let players use their instincts.  The best players have the best instincts.
