Developing a quarterback who stays calm and makes smart decisions in the pocket is one of coaching's biggest challenges. The three drills in this video will help QBs who tend to bail too early, struggle with pressure, or have accuracy issues when moving in the pocket.
Gary Goff, Head Coach, McNeese State shows how he implements these drills and what his coaching points are for each one.
The drills are a part of his entire lesson on QB Fundamental Drill Work. The lesson is a part of The Gary Goff Air Raid System that is available on Glazier Drive.
A lot of stuff happens to the pocket. The QB must get out of that pocket at times. You have to work in practice on how you want him to react in a game.
In the flush drill, the coach pushes the QB out a certain direction. As he's working with him, he's giving him a number for his target. We have a net with targets named one, two, and three from left to right. The quarterback looks to throw the ball to the designated target the coach gives him.
Our fundamentals we're working on here: out of the gun, doing a three-step drop, hitching up, keeping two hands on the ball, protecting the football as he escapes the pocket. Many young quarterbacks tend to scramble with the ball in one hand down by their side, so we teach protection with two hands on the ball as we escape. The quarterback coach then yells a target number for him to hit.
