Measure What Matters with the Offensive Control Index - Wade Lytal

The Trinity (TX) coaching staff believes there's a difference between outscoring opponents and controlling them.  They have developed a metric that is a tangible way to teach their players what constitutes controlling a game.  It also provides a postgame measurement to determine whether or not they achieved the goal of control.

The presenter in the video is Trinity OC/O-Line Coach Wade Lytal.  He takes you through how they compute their Offensive Control Index and behind the scenes on how and why it was developed.  View his entire Glazer Drive clinic at Offensive Control Index: How We Track Our Offenses Ability to Control a Football Game.

Much of the development of the Trinity Offensive Philosophy and Offensive Control Index can be summarized in this quote:

"I believe you win games by eliminating things you do to lose games penalties, negative plays. The next way you win is in the trenches. Run the football and stop the run. You can win games by not doing that, but you'll never control them. There's a difference between outscoring opponents and controlling them. We won seven games last year and didn't control a single one... I can't sleep at night because we didn't control one of them."  Matt Rhule
