Level Up Your D-Line Stunts: 1-Gap Movement & Key Read Drills - Jordan Gigli

Teach your defensive line to dominate the line of scrimmage by mastering the fundamentals of one-gap movements and stunt reads. Whether you're trying to shut down spread offenses or contain power running games, these proven drills will elevate your defensive line's ability to penetrate and disrupt plays in the backfield.

The presenter is Northern Illinois Defensive Line Coach Jordan Gigli.  He shows both practice and game film to detail their techniques.

Movement Concepts

Why Move?

🏈To keep offensive linemen from being able to tee off on the D-Line.|
🏈Gives the D-Line a 3-way go and slows down the O-Line off the ball over time. It doesn't slow down the D-Line.

🏈When you are moving, you need to be balanced with weight on the outside foot.

🏈The key is the O-Lineman you are moving to--the near V of the neck.

🏈Need to coach the D-Linemen to keep their eyes up. They have a tendency to drip their eyes.  The body goes where the eyes go.

🏈Distance = Time--the first step should gain ground as fast as possible.

Lay head opposite and cock your rip arm.
2nd Step--Climb step, get vertical
Eyes up, dip and rip upfield should and pry upfield (RB Aware)
Show them your number.

🏈 Block recognition: Fight a face, chase a tail.  If the player is coming at you, fight the block and play the gap.  If the O-Lineman is going away, the D-Line chases.

🏈 Coach the Linemen to Stay on their path.  The only things that alter the path are the ball or a puller.
