Florida Atlantic Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator Ed Warinner has been in Division I football for 40 seasons. His stints have included Michigan State, Army, Kansas, Ilinois, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Minnesota, and Michigan.
In the video segment below, he takes you through how he teaches the G/T (Guard/Tackle) Counter. His illustration includes how to run it against both odd and even fronts.
The video segement is a portion of his G/T Counter Clinic that is available on Glazier Drive.
Coach Warinner teaches his linemen:
"Hard Work is not punishment. It is simply the price of admission for the opportunity to reach a standard of sustained excellence."
He likes to run the play against an under front because it is a true G/T Counter. That allows them to block back on the A gap defender. That is an easier block for the center and allows the guard and tackle the opportunity to pull.
This is a gap scheme play--on the front side of the play all players are responsible for blocking their inside gap.
Deuce block--guard and tackle combination block. In the G/T counter scheme, they double team the second linebacker. The center makes that ID pre-snap.
