Teaching Linebackers: Should you stun or slip?

Is there enough time and distance to go around the blocker and finish on the ball?

If the answer is "No," use the Stun technique

If the answer is "Yes," use the Slip technique

Stun and shed--striking the blocker key points

  • Vertical leverage: Forehead on Chin (Being lower than the blocker)
  • Horizontal leverage: (Your hands inside his)
  • Speed to lock out: (Velocity)
  • Rub the ribs: (Elbows in, thumbs up)
  • Power: Foot in ground (Near foot up)
  • Create separation--shed the blocker low and away violently
  • Hands go from high to low (emphasize vertical leverage)

Slip--avoiding the blocker

  • Close the distance, full speed
  • Attack 1/2 the man (no run arounds)
  • Change blocking surface (hands/feet)
    Vertical--changing pad level (Dip, Club/Rip)
    Horizontal--opening hips/shoulders (Arm over)
  • Stack the blocker
