Every coach knows that wide receiver drops can make or break a game, yet addressing this issue often requires mastering the basics through repetition.

In this post, former UTEP OC & WR Coach, Jake Brown shares three essential drills that focus on fundamentals, helping your players build reliable hands and confidence on the field.

This video outlines three key drills designed to improve wide receiver performance by reducing drops through focused repetition and attention to detail.

  1. Snap Drill:

    • Purpose: Trains receivers to snap their eyes to the ball quickly, ensuring they locate and frame it properly before making the catch.
    • Execution: Receivers react to a coach’s verbal cue (“ball”), turn their heads rapidly, and secure the ball. The drill emphasizes muscle memory and exaggerated eye movement to ensure consistency during gameplay.

  2. Contested Shuffle Drill:

    • Purpose: Prepares receivers for contested catches by simulating 50-50 ball scenarios without excessive physical strain.
    • Execution: Players shuffle laterally while focusing on framing and attacking the ball aggressively. The drill includes pulling the ball away violently after catching to simulate game situations and prevent defenders from stripping it.

  3. Perfect Drill:

    • Purpose: Combines multiple skills, including releases, route-running, catching, and ball security, into a comprehensive warm-up.
    • Execution: Position groups (receivers, tight ends, and running backs) practice against hand combat, frame the ball post-catch, and navigate a gauntlet for ball security. Coaches attempt to knock the ball loose to build strong hands and focus.

The drills emphasize repetition, muscle memory, and "coaching it hard," ensuring players master fundamentals like focusing on the ball, maintaining strong hands, and securing the catch. These techniques not only enhance catching ability but also foster confidence and resilience in game situations.
