Every offensive line coach knows that the success of outside zone often hinges not on the playside action, but on how effectively your backside linemen execute their responsibilities.

In this video, retired Offensive Line Coach Dave Christensen takes us through his version of the  "swipe block" technique. The action is a combo  between your backside guard and tackle.

In this detailed breakdown, we'll examine how to teach and perfect this devastating combo technique that consistently creates cutoff angles and leverage against backside defenders.

Coach Christensen's entire 49-lesson offensive line training system is available on Glazier Drive.  The lesson this video is taken from is O-Line "Swipe" Zone Technique.

  1. The swipe block is a backside blocking technique involving the guard and tackle.

  2. Main goals:
  • Guard avoids direct contact with defensive linemen
  • Tackle pulls and attempts to cut off or cut down the defensive lineman
  • Both linemen aim to create an angle that helps the running back get to the linebacker
  1. Technique details:
  • Guard takes an open step and tries to get to the linebacker
  • Tackle pulls flat and tries to cut the defensive lineman (three technique)
  • Linemen should match their shoulder angle to the running back's track
  1. Benefits:
  • Creates leverage against backside defenders
  • Prevents defensive players from disrupting the running play
  • Allows offensive linemen to effectively block pursuit defenders

Coach Christensen provides multiple video clip examples demonstrating the swipe block technique, highlighting good and less effective executions by offensive linemen.
