Master the art of championship-caliber tackling with exclusive insights from Ferris State's dominant defense that helped power them to three national titles in four years.

In this video, we'll explore the "Five Fights" system that has helped their defensive unit become an unstoppable force. You will see both theory and game applications.

The system is presented by Ferris State Linebackers Coach Grant Caserta.  View the remainder of his clinic on Glazier Drive:  Ferris Tackling Techniques.

The video covers the first two components with multiple game examples.

  1. Tracking
  • Maintaining proper leverage relative to the ball carrier (inside-out or outside-in)
  • Never let the ball cross the defender's nose
  • Using sidelines as an additional defender
  • Reestablishing leverage if lost
  1. Preparing
  • Square view: Use two feet when directly facing the ball carrier
  • Side view: Most common (80%+ of tackles), use near foot/shoulder technique
  • Defenders should get their foot "in the circle" of the ball carrier to avoid lunging
  • Run-through vs. swoop technique based on the distance to the ball carrier
