"Reliefs" are built-in options that allow a quarterback to quickly adjust the play before the snap based on what they see from the defense. One key factor is the number of defenders in the box.

In this video, Rick Bowie, Offensive Coordinator, Abilene Christian University outlines how he utilizes reliefs in their offensive schemes.  At that time he filmed this clinic, he was at Valdosta State.

This 9-minute clip is a portion of Coach Bowie's Glazier Drive Clinic on: Play Action vs. RPO in the Air Raid

ORIGINAL PURPOSE OF RPOs

  • Simple Post snap solutions for bad run boxes
  • We experienced the gray area of post snap reads created lack of efficiency.
  • Offense is cyclical and ever-changing: Don't be too stubborn to change with it

RELIEFS VS RPO'S

  • Reliefs PRE-Snap throw for QB vs bad run looks.
  • More guys in or around box then we can block
  • Good matchups on perimeter
  • Give QB ability to check to 6 man protection or better run game call - small menu
  • If we want to run the ball, we will make the call dictates that.

PLAYACTION VS RPO

  • The Gray Area with Post Snap RP0's
  • Missed opportunities on gash runs
  • Pre-Snap Disguised Defenses
  • Quarterback gets caught with ball
  • Ineligible downfield
  • Sacks due to lack of protection
  • Turnovers due to forced throws
  • Difference between reading 1st and 2nd level defenders (i.e. 5 tech v. Nickel/Sam)
