As a special teams coach, you might not have much practice time with your players.  Here are 9 non-contact and low-impact drills that you can use to make the most of your time with them.

The drills are taken from Coach Matt Thurin's (Special Teams Coordinator, Boston College) Glazier Drive presentation on Off-Season & Pre-Season Special Teams Practice Ideas to Prepare for a Great Season.

In the video below, Coach Thurin includes practice drill video and game film to enhance his lecture.

Philosophy

  1. Energy & Effort
  2. Tough & Detailed
  3. Constant battle of field position
  4. Best players play
  5. One play (1 shot mentality) One Down
Setting the expectations for your special teams
  1. Set a clear standard for the only way to act, perform, and engage.
  2. Tell and show the standard.  Have evidence.  Show it on film.
  3. Equip your players with the tools--buzz words, technique.
  4. Inspire them.
  5. Elevate them to reach the standard.

Expectations

  1. Energy and effort.
  2. Run from drill to drill.
  3. Listen and work to execute details.
  4. Over Communicate.
  5. The ball is everything.
