Learn the drills that running backs coach AJ Steward has used at Baylor, Oregon State, Arizona, BYU, and Rice to develop elite pass-catching running backs.
The video below is a part of his Glazier Drive system on Developing Running Backs. It was taken from the clinic on Running Back Catch Development.
Take his concepts of breaking down the base catches you need running backs to be able to make in your system to develop your drills. Then, expand the catches you drill as their skills grow.
A few other takeaways from the clinic:
Coach Steward likes to do this drill pre-practice because he feels that it gets the backs into a rhythm.
He feels that it should be an everyday drill and if you do have the time to devote to it in your indy time, it is important to do so.
The drills are designed to work on catching the ball in pockets in their base offense. That is why it is important to tweak them to fit your routes and scheme.
They work boundary swing routes, field swing routes, boundary arrow routes, field arrow routes, spot routes, 3 x 3 routes in their true base pass dropback pass game.
Having their eyes around, staying hot at the top, and coming to balance so that as soon as they catch the ball they can transition and get vertical without having to reset their feet.
They are detailed in their landmarks so that they can give clarity to the quarterback.
