One of the most important skills in kickoff coverage is to learn how to win the junction point battles.  That is, the one on one battles that take place all over the football field.

Leverage and technique is what wins these battles.  In the video below, Pete Lembo currently Head Coach of the University at Buffalo shows you how he teaches players to win these battles.

His entire presentation is housed on Glazier Drive.  Special Teams Organization & Drills: Practice Organization, Staff Responsibilities, ST’s 101 Fundamentals, & Competitive Drills

Expectations on the Field

🏈 The mindset must be that of a sense of urgency to get a lot of work done!
🏈 There is a lot to do in a short amount of time
🏈 Ways to get more done: Even lines, next man ready, proper starting position (Example: Speed Position or Power Position)
🏈 Can't afford to waste 2 minutes of a 5 minute period getting organized.
🏈 Awareness and efficiency
🏈 High energy and great focus!  That doesn't mean that every drill is a full-speed drill.  Some are a slower teach tempo, but players always need to be locked in.
🏈 Understand the "Why" (Why are we doing this specific drill right now?)
🏈 When one player is being coached, all players are being coached.  Don't make the same mistake that someone else has already made.
🏈 Repetition is necessary to create good habits.  Don't get bored.  Complacency is the enemy.
🏈 Maturity "You don't know it as well as you think you do."
🏈 Bottom line--you might get 1 or 2 reps in practice.  Make them count.
