Defensive linemen don't need a lot of pass rush moves to consistently get to the quarterback.  But, they do need to master those moves.

In our video, Coach Oscar Giles, Defensive Line Coach at Houston shows four drills that he uses with his defensive linemen.

In addition to the drills, he discusses the coaching points and skills that each drill is intended to improve.  The entire clinic on D-Line Pass Progression is available on Glazier Drive.

Getting to the Quarterback

  • Speed rush is your first move.
  • Then, go from speed to power--attack the 4 yard spot if he is there, attack the outside V shoulder.
  • Leverage the blocker and flip your hips.
  • Finish through the blocker with a club and a rip.
  • You don't need a lot of moves, but each primary move should have a counter move.
  • They focus on long arm, chop, and side scissors.
  • If a player wants to specialize in another move, they will work with him.
  • For inside rushers, create separation, then go speed to power.
  • Set Line - if a blocker oversets, he tells the defensive ends to counter back inside.  The tackles will cover contain on the inside.
