3 WR Blocking Drills That Eliminate Holding Penalties Game-Changing Techniques - Derrick Sherman

Derrick Sherman (Asst Head Coach/WR Coach at Houston) designs his drills to:

1) Confidence - Inspire confidence
2) Confusion - Create game-like confusion
3) Control - Learn to regain control of the situation

The video shows practice film of three of his drills along with game video to give application examples.  The video is a segment of his WR Technique & Drills: Blocking, Releases, & Top of Route clinic on Glazier Drive.

Drill Setup and Philosophy

  • The drills are designed to simulate realistic blocking scenarios, typically used in football camps and spring training
  • Focuses on teaching receivers how to block effectively in different run situations
  • Emphasizes creating confidence and understanding through practical training

Blocking Fundamentals

  1. Pre-Block Positioning
    • Maintain leverage on the defensive back
    • Stay adaptable without knowing the exact play direction
    • Be prepared to react to the ball carrier's movement
  2. Contact Phase Techniques
    • Start with low stance: butt down, elbows in, thumbs up, eyes at throat level
    • Continuously move feet during engagement
    • Avoid anchoring, which can lead to holding penalties
  3. Block Release Strategies
    • Use "dead arm" technique when defender tries to disengage
    • Drop arms to avoid holding calls
    • Continue moving feet even after initial contact

Run Type Considerations

  • Understand inside (10 and 2 o'clock) and outside run angles
  • Adjust blocking approach based on run direction
  • Recognize leverage (inside, outside, head-up) and adapt blocking technique accordingly

Critical Coaching Insights

  • Blocking is 80% footwork, 20% arm technique
  • Teach players to feel and understand blocking sensations
  • Focus on giving the ball carrier multiple running options
  • Practice timing and awareness of different play types (swing passes, RPOs)

Coaching Methodology

  • Break down complex concepts into simple, digestible instructions
  • Use visual demonstrations and repetitive drills
  • Emphasize understanding play direction and ball movement
  • Build player confidence through progressive learning

Recommended Drill Progression

  • Start with basic breakdown techniques
  • Gradually introduce complexity
  • Practice in football school or during spring training first week
  • Use game film to reinforce learning
