Teaching tackling is no easy task.  Safety is always the most important factor.  For linebackers, there are multiple angles of approach to their tackles.

Sammy Lawanson, Co-Defensive Coordinator and Outside Linebackers Coach at Bowling Green, shows you some drills, techniques, and game footage application to assist you in teaching tackling.

The video is from LB Tackling Angle Tackle which is among the 13 lessons in Glazier Drive's Sammy Lawanson LB System.

Some of Coach Lawanson's Notes on Tackling

  • Wrap up and accelerate your feet through the ball carrier.
  • Hit with your stub, not your helmet.
  • Keep feet running until the ball carrier is off the ground.
  • A lot of tackling is desire and want to.

His teaching progression is part-part-whole.

Angle tackling is near foot, near shoulder.

The tackler brings his arms up and through in the drill, and accelerate the feet.  The beginning of the finish is a one-legged takeoff.

In his drills, he adds footwork as well as wrap and finish to be able to get two things done at once.
