2 drills to help you develop playmaking tight ends with Jonathan Himebauch Assistant coach with the Arlington Renegades. He was the Tight Ends Coach at Air Force when he delivered this clinic.
His entire clinic on Tight End Pass Game Fundamentals is available on Glazier Drive.
The drills in the video below are narrated with practice video. The first drill is a ball security drill called "Hardball" and it requires the tight end to secure the football in four scenarios with coaches working to dislodge it. The second drill is "Awkward Catch" and puts the tight ends in difficult positions to make a pass catch.
Practice expectations for tight ends (and coaches)
For the players to trust the coaches they must know that the coaches trust them.
1) Play fast--speed off the ball.
2) Practice and play with effort and juice. This is non-negotiable. You have to present information to players in a variety of ways. This applies to coaches as well as players.
3) Step frequency--activate the feet, change stride length.
4) Take care of the football
5) Secure the catch and finish for 2 lines.
